Agile velocity – Some Important Points

The metric used to measure the time taken to complete a user story in the giver sprint is agile velocity. It helps the manager of the project to get an idea about the time a team will take to complete a story in a sprint. Thus, it is a tool that helps in planning and executing the work. Click here to learn more about agile velocity. People often think of it as a goal, rather it is a measurement system.

The way of measuring agile velocity

It is the work completed in a given amount of time. The unity of the work that got completed can be measured in the following:

  • Story points
  • Engineering hours
  • Story pints

And the time taken is measured in the following:

  • Weeks
  • Interactions
  • Sprints

The way you choose at the start will be the same in the future.

The project manager sees the sprints that were required to complete a work. For the coming projects, the project manager will have a better understanding of how long will a team take to deliver in a sprint and how many sprints they will require to deliver a given project/ the manager will aspect the project accordingly.

Does velocity in agile help in determining a team’s efficiency?

Higher agile velocity means that a team is performing well and is completing work in a smaller period. Higher agile velocity increases the workflow and thus in turn increases the revenue. Lower velocity indicated that the team will need time to improve their capacity.

Often people try to increase the velocity if they see that there is lower work delivered. If the team has had a good velocity before, and it has decreased recently, the project manager should find out the issues and resolve them. Instead, some people try to increase the pressure, which might affect the quality of work.

If you find no mistakes then you should lower the goal and be conscious of it. It will help you in calculating the timeline and the budget.

If you are seeing a high delivery, it is also a matter of concern. Take a deep dive into the project as see if the team is compromising the quality of work to deliver more in the given sprint.

Ending note

Agile velocity helps a project manager to get an idea of how much work their team can deliver and make commitments and set goals accordingly.
